Ingredients
  

Bread and Vegetables
  • 1 loaf day old bread 1 pound loaf, white, wheat or sourdough
  • 1 cup celery chopped
  • 1 cup onion chopped
  • ½ cup butter unsalted
Seasonings
  • 2 teaspoons poultry seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon dried sage
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
Liquid Ingredients
  • 2 cups chicken broth or vegetable broth, low sodium
Finishing Touches
  • ¼ cup fresh parsley chopped
  • 2 large eggs beaten

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. If your bread is fresh, place bread cubes on a baking sheet and toast in the oven for 10-15 minutes until dry and crisp.
  3. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat and sauté chopped celery and onion for 5-7 minutes until softened.
  4. Stir in poultry seasoning, sage, thyme, salt, and pepper, cooking for an additional 1-2 minutes.
Mixing
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the dried bread cubes with the sautéed vegetable mixture.
  2. Slowly pour broth over the mixture while stirring gently to moisten the bread.
  3. Add chopped parsley and beaten eggs if a denser stuffing is desired.
Baking
  1. Transfer the mixture to the greased baking dish and spread evenly.
  2. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  3. Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 15-20 minutes until the top is golden brown.

Notes

Ensure to taste the mixture before baking to adjust the seasoning according to your preference. Serve warm with fresh parsley for garnish.
