  • 6 pieces sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped Choose medium-sized, firm sweet potatoes free from blemishes.
  • 3/4 cup half-and-half or milk Room temperature for best mixing.
  • 4 Tbsp. unsalted butter Use room temperature for easier blending.
  • 2 Tbsp. maple syrup Can substitute with brown sugar for a caramelized sweetness.
  • to taste Kosher salt Season water while boiling for flavor.
  • to taste Freshly ground black pepper Adjust according to taste.
  • as needed Thyme leaves, for serving Optional garnish for flavor and presentation.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Peel and chop the sweet potatoes into even pieces.
Cooking
  1. Place the chopped sweet potatoes in a large pot, cover with at least two inches of water, and season with kosher salt.
  2. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to maintain a gentle boil.
  3. Cook until very tender, about 15 to 25 minutes, then drain in a colander.
  4. Return the potatoes to the pot and mash until smooth and creamy with a potato masher or ricer.
Mixing
  1. Stir in half-and-half or milk, unsalted butter, and maple syrup until well combined.
  2. Season with freshly ground black pepper and more salt to taste.
Serving
  1. Top with fresh thyme leaves before serving for added flavor and presentation.

Notes

For a variation, add roasted garlic or spices like cayenne pepper. You can also mix in other root vegetables like carrots for a unique twist.
